Bringing the Wealth back to the Workers – Raising the Minimum Wage!
On the heals of our victory over proposition N, POWER worked with the Day Labor Program, the Chinese Progressive Association, the Living Wage Coalition, and other groups to put an initiative on the ballot to raise the wage for EVERY worker in SF to $8.50/hour, including day laborers, domestic workers, and workers in welfare-to-work programs, and set a minimum wage increase every year according to the cost of living. We all felt that even $8.50/ hour isn't enough, but the initiative was an important step forward and enabled us to take $108 million away from the Newsom's and Getty's of the city and give it back to working class communities of color. We set out to wage the struggle in the communities directly affected - the Tenderloin, the Bayview, Sunnydale, Excelcior, and the Mission. Ultimately we won by a solid 60% of the vote, giving SF the highest minimum wage in the country.
