Working for Global Justice and Fighting the FTAA
In November 2003, POWER traveled across the country to participate in the grassroots mobilization to protest the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas. We prepped for the action with our close allies in Miami, LIFFT (Low-Income Families Fighting Together). We held several political education sessions leading up to our trip to build our consciousness and solidarity with no- and low-wage workers in Brazil, Haiti, Mexico, and Venezuela. We learned how our struggle against poverty, privatization, and environmental racism is deeply tied to the struggles of working people in the 3rd world and throughout the Americas.
POWER sent a delegation of 10 people and joined forces with ROOT CAUSE, a coalition of grassroots organizations from communities of color in Miami opposed to the FTAA. We marched 34-miles in 3 days, took part in Direct Actions, participated in a massive labor march, and organized member-to-member conferences with our comrade organizations.
POWER wants to express our appreciation to Rainbow Grocery for the grant that made this delegation possible.
